Though Wyoming did not become a state until 1890, the government laid out plans for the University of Wyoming four years earlier. The new university served the needs of both new settlers flocking to the state and the children they brought along with them. This gorgeous campus now features a nice combination of buildings dating back to the early days of its founding and the early part of the 20th century as well as more modern facilities. The University of Wyoming is a land-grant institution that ranks as one of the nation's top schools. Not only did the university receive a ranking from publications like Washington Monthly and U.S. News and World Report on a national level, but QS and ARWU ranked it on a global scale too.
Program Level: Baccalaureate
The University of Wyoming offers a Baccalaureate degree program for incoming freshmen and those who do not have an advanced degree. Also known as its Bachelor of Social Work Program or BWS Program, it allows students the chance to earn social work degrees in Wyoming. Students must demonstrate competency in several areas, including reading, writing and math while working on their degrees. The university requires that all students complete a minimum of 53 credit hours of courses within the social work field. You'll also have the chance to select a minor in a field like international studies, gender and women's studies or health sciences. The University of Wyoming has a field education program available that lets undergrads gain some experience actually working in the field. You will need to apply for a spot within this program, but the university can help place you in a local organization. Most BSW students do the field experience program in the summer.
Program Level: Masters
Social work degrees in Wyoming are also available at the graduate level. The University of Wyoming offers a program at the Master's level called its Master of Social Work or MSW program. Though the university requires that students do a capstone project during their senior years, students have the option of choosing between a thesis or an evaluation project. Thesis students write a paper based on their own research and findings, while students who select the evaluation project will do a detailed project that professors later evaluate. The courses in this program teach students how to act in a professional and ethical manner, do both practice and research, assess families and other types of clients and evaluate all clients who come to them for help. The University of Wyoming also offers several certificate programs for MSW students, including two certificates for those hoping to work with younger children or in schools.
