Since 1982, the College of Arts & Sciences has granted the Social Work BSW to University of North Carolina-Pembroke undergrads committed to strengths-based generalist practice with rural and indigenous populations. Chaired by Dr. Yale Kodwo-Nyameazea, the 54-credit major springs off the liberal arts core to real-world practice addressing community injustices. Courses like Human Behavior, Women in Society, GLBT Populations, and Conflict Management keep a 16:1 learner-faculty ratio for active involvement. Seniors spend 32 hours weekly, or 400 hours total, at advocacy agencies, such as Pinnacle Family Services, Monarch Health, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, DaVita, the Odum Home, and Union Elementary. At the Weinstein Health Sciences Building, the University of North Carolina-Pembroke admits five types of MSW cohorts for custom leadership preparation that fulfills the state's Certified Master Social Worker credential. Directed by Dr. Summer Gainey Woodside, the 60-credit program can take 18 months fast track, 24 months traditional, or 48 years extended. Advanced Standing graduates with previous CSWE training finish only 33 credits in one year full-time or two years part-time. The University of North Carolina-Pembroke welcomed its inaugural class of 15 in 1887 as Croatan Normal School after Robeson County Rep. Hamilton McMillan's bill passed that March. Originally formed to educate teachers of the Lumbee tribe, it became the Cherokee Indian Normal School in 1913. For the next 40 years, it was the United States' only public, four-year bachelor's institution for Native Americans. After Brown v. Board, Pembroke State opened to all ethnicities in 1954 and joined the 17-school UNC system in 1972. Budgeting $53.7 million yearly, the University of North Carolina-Pembroke now enrolls 6,252 Braves, including Social Work majors, with 68 percent retention. Best Social Work Programs positioned Pembroke sixth in the East for affordability. PayScale calculated a mid-career average salary of $65,400 for University of North Carolina-Pembroke alums. WalletHub picked UNCP 268th for the South Region. In Washington Monthly, UNCP claimed the nation's 172nd best financial aid and 25th highest graduation rate too.

University of North Carolina-Pembroke Accreditation Details

In January 2010, the University of North Carolina-Pembroke underwent its last institutional review from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to keep the max 10-year Level III accreditation under its sixth chancellor, Dr. Robin Cummings, who earned the National Library of Science Award. Headquartered 336 miles west in Decatur, this 11-state Deep South accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to evaluate academic practices in UNCP's 100 baccalaureate and 42 master's options. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) reaffirmed the Pembroke BSW and MSW majors in February 2016 too.

University of North Carolina-Pembroke Application Requirements

Classified as "moderately difficult" by Peterson's, the University of North Carolina-Pembroke accepted just 3,364 of the 4,573 Fall 2016 applicants for 74 percent admission. The Social Work BSW only considers first-semester juniors who've finished at least three-fourths of the core. Those who earn an associate via the NC Reverse Transfer Program will satisfy general education. Each prerequisite course, such as SWK 2000, must be graded "C" or higher. Holding a cumulative GPA above 2.5 is expected, though the average is 3.29. Documentation for 40+ volunteer service hours is mandatory. Though optional, undergrads have a mean SAT score of 990 and ACT score of 20. The MSW requires 120 bachelor's credits that include the Psychology, Sociology, Statistics, Economics, and Political Science prerequisites. The minimum GPA is 2.75, except for Advanced Standing entrants who need a 3.2.

The BSW Admissions Committee at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke set November 15th and April 15th deadlines. The NC Promise Tuition can reduce semester costs to $500 or $2,500 per semester. Federal Work-Study jobs also pay at least $7.55/hour on campus.
